Site plan of the facility

Grubenhagen Castle is the ruins of a low castle in Grubenhagen Castle , a district of Vollrathsruhe in the Mecklenburg Lake District in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania .

Only a few structural remains of the castle have survived, mainly 10 meter high wall parts of the former donjon with a wall thickness of 3.3 meters made of field stones and brick . The rest of the facility can mainly be accessed via the geological conditions on site. In the northwest was the circular main castle , which was connected to the southeast by a somewhat lower, roughly rectangular outer castle . The entire complex was surrounded by a wide moat , some of which is still preserved.

The castle was built in the 13th century by the von Grube family and expanded until the 15th century. The later lords of the castle provided the von Maltzan family , who built an estate north of the castle , which eventually replaced the castle as a manor in the 19th century .
