Berteroda Castle

The Berterodaer Castle is located in the eastern part of the town Berteroda which a district of the city since 1994, Eisenach in Thuringia is.

history

In 1170 a Poppo de Sonneborn handed over the "Bernwarterode" estate to the Fulda monastery . This monastery remained co-owner of the property until the Napoleonic period. The von Harstall family, who came from nearby Mihla , acquired the Berteroda estate in 1452, at which time they were already wealthy in numerous places in the Werra Valley. Berteroda became a subsidiary of the family, Diedorfer Linie. Since the agricultural yields in the Berterodaer Flur were meager, the landlords often stayed in the army, in 1832 this line with Parakeet von Harstall died out in the male line. Other family lines only took over the inheritance for a short time, finally selling the estate to local buyers in 1869.

Structural matters

Today's Berteroda Castle was built in 1626 on the solid foundation walls of older predecessor buildings, which also include the large barrel cellar. During the Thirty Years' War Berteroda was also haunted several times by gangs of mercenaries, and the looters did not stop at the apparently secure castles of the landed gentry. The original arrangement of the buildings and the manor can no longer be clearly recognized today. The once fortified character of the manor was largely abandoned at this time. The east side with today's entrance is well protected by the masonry in front. The wall now surrounds a small park. The estate also experienced natural protection indirectly through the village pond and the nearby brook - the Böber. On the north side of the castle wall there is a firmly inserted late medieval loopholes with the year 1597 carved in stone. On the west side, a semicircular tower is in front, built exactly at the most endangered point of the complex. The south side appears to be the most changed today. A traditional half-timbered floor was placed on the massive walls of the ground floor. The inscription "Anno 1626" above the main portal on the east side dates this construction phase. The interior of the building was probably rebuilt even more often. The castle itself served as a noble residence, was a school and restaurant and, most recently, a residential building. At times, the municipal offices were also housed there. In 1869, several farming families in the village acquired the castle estate and the land and divided these properties among themselves. After extensive renovation work in recent years, Berteroda Castle is now in a remarkable state.
