history

The noble family von Rana (u) sat on Bonau until 1550, when the von Bünau family took over the estate. In 1585 it was sold to the von Weißbach family, who owned Bonau until 1689. During this time, in 1627, Bonau Castle was built. It is a former moated castle on the foundation walls of an old knight's castle. It is a two-storey quarry stone building with a high hipped roof . At first the castle was surrounded by water on all four sides and it is built on stilts. A bridge led from the farm yard to the house. In 1696 it was converted into a hereditary property.

After the manor was bought back by the von Bünau family in 1689, it was sold to the von Dieskau family in 1704, who had already sold Bonau to the Erfurth family in 1710. From 1718 the von Zedtwitz family sat on Bonau. During the Seven Years' War one of the most important representatives of the German Enlightenment, the hymn and fable poet Christian Fürchtegott Gellert , stayed with this manor family .

In 1784 the von Zehmen family took over the castle. It was followed by von Ingersleben in 1811, before the castle passed into bourgeois hands in 1814. The west side of the moat was filled in around 1800 and a house garden was built there. The allodification of the property took place in 1833 by cabinet order.

After the owner was expropriated during the land reform in the Soviet occupation zone in 1945, the building served as refugee accommodation until a roof fire broke out and the building had to be evacuated. The building was renovated from 1992 to 1994 and converted into a hotel, the last tenant of which had to file for bankruptcy. The castle has been privately owned since 2005.
