history

Brunnwald Castle

The castle in the forest area of the Brunnwald was built between 1724 and 1727 in the middle of the Brunnwald as a Starhemberg hunting lodge. A fire in 1898 largely destroyed it. In 1905 the castle was rebuilt. The four-story tower protruding from the wall comes from the reconstruction.

In 1939 the palace was confiscated by the National Socialists and used as an NSV mother's home. After the Second World War , religious services were held in the castle in the Bad Leonfelden area for the evangelicals who had come about as a result of the large refugee movements. These were later moved to the main school in the market. A maternity ward of the Diakoniewerk was also housed in the castle. In 1955 a convalescence home of the Red Cross was quartered, then the building stood empty for a while. From 1965 to 1982 it was leased to a Spanish association for guests and as a children's home.

The building has served as a restaurant and residence since 1993. The hotel and restaurant business is run by Helga and Gilbert Holzer. The castle is still owned by the Starhemberg Forest and Goods Directorate.
