history

Until 1468 there was an outbuilding on the site of the castle , which was owned by the von Anhalt-Bernburg family . The dilapidation of the Vorwerk began from 1603. Around 1700 a princely house existed again at this point. Today's palace was built in 1792 on behalf of Prince Ludwig von Anhalt . It was used as a hunting lodge by his family and friends . The two single-storey utility wings, which flanked a courtyard, were torn down together with the castle kitchen and servants' room at the beginning of the 20th century. From 1918 the building served as a district forester and the forester's residence. In 1919 , Duke Joachim von Askanien had valuable furnishings brought from Diebzig Castle to Zerbst Castle . These furnishings were also destroyed when Zerbst Castle was destroyed during the Second World War . After the Second World War ended, the castle served as accommodation for resettled families . Gradual renovation of the building began in 1992. It was planned to use it for cultural purposes, such as the accommodation of a local museum, an exhibition venue for art exhibitions and concerts, but this was not done from 2014. The castle has been empty since then.
