Engelseck Castle (also known as Engelsegg ) is a castle complex in Steyr (Redtenbachergasse No. 9) built around 1500 . Until 1642 the property was called Teufelseck . The entry in the list of the Federal Monuments Office is "Engelsegg Castle" ( list entry ).

history

The exact construction time of Engelseck is unknown, but the seat is mentioned as early as the 13th century. The builder is probably the rich cloth merchant Hans Fuchsberger , who was also the mayor of Steyr in 1525 and 1526. Josef Achtmarkt von Achtmarktstein (Mayor from 1642 to 1645, † 1647) acquired the castle in 1641 and rebuilt it in the Renaissance style, in 1642 he applied to Emperor Ferdinand III. the renaming of the residence from Teufelseck to Engelseck. The earlier name Teufelsegg was derived from the partly underground Teufelsbach .

In 1667 Mattheus Riss owned the castle; the Riß von Riesenfels family remained in the possession of the castle until 1726. Johann Josef von Riesenfels was married to Helena Theresia Händl von Ramingdorf . It followed in the possession of Franziska von Rummel. In 1783 Baroness Franziska von Rummel sold the property to Jakob Voith.

Other owners were: the Höger family, Josef Mayr (1835), then Josef Werndl , who also owned Rosenegg Castle . Through his daughter Anna, Engelsegg came to the Counts of Lamberg. The city of Steyr has owned the property since 1918.

architecture

The castle wall to Redtenbachergasse

The castle is a simple two-story renaissance building . Due to the three-wing floor plan, the courtyard is open to the front. The short side wings have crooked roofs on the front. A towering tower is integrated into the central wing, surrounded by a crenellated wall with two round towers. Instead of a roof, the central tower has a circumferential platform with a false crenellated wreath, which replaces the onion tower that previously existed. A statue of St. Nepomuk . The outside is decorated with a round arch frieze and an imitation ashlar. On the south side of the courtyard there is a coat of arms with the year 1766, on the west side the year 1617 is attached. A roundabout with a view of the city of Steyr is presented to the round tower on Redtenbachergasse . There is a tree-lined park next to and behind the castle.
