The Teufelsbach is a right tributary of the Steyr in the statutory city of Steyr in Upper Austria .

Run

The Teufelsbach arises when Garstner place Saaß . It flows in a ditch below Pesendorf eastwards, and then northwards past Garsten , where the Garstner pond is, and further through Garsten Nord , and below Schlühslmayr through Reichenschwall . To the west below the old town of Steyr , in Vogelsang , it takes up the Edlbauerngrabenbach (Hofergrabenbach). After a good 5 km run, shortly after Engelseck Castle, at the Wehrgraben tunnel , it flows into the Gsang water , a tributary of the Steyr on the Gsang Island (Eisenfeld) .

Hydrography and History

The name probably refers to the wild run. Engelseck Castle was accordingly called Teufelseck until 1642 . The old name of the brook is Sarningbach , or Sarmingbach , a Germanization of the Sabinicha named around 990 . which is of Slavic origin and comes from žaba 'frog' ('frog brook'). This is the name of the Sarning cadastral community . The place name Reichenschwall also goes back to the stream ('rich flood').

Until it was diverted in 1572, the brook flowed south of the old town through the Hundsgraben and flowed into the Enns at today's Neutor . The upper course can fall dry in summer, but it also creates dangerous floods.

The catchment area - including the upper Gsangwasser - is 6.2 km².
