Konrad Schiffmann (born August 25, 1871 in Grieskirchen , † March 12, 1941 in Linz ) was an Austrian historian , archivist and librarian.

Life

Konrad Schiffmann, son of a shoemaker, was ordained a priest in 1894 and studied from 1895 at the University of Innsbruck , among others with Joseph Seemüller , German studies, classical languages, history and geography. After teaching at the Episcopal Gymnasium Petrinum in Linz from 1901 , in 1908 he was entrusted with the management of the Linz Study Library , which had been looked after by the Kremsmünster Abbey since its foundation in 1774 .

On behalf of the Austrian Academy of Sciences in Vienna , he published a collection of the medieval monastery surbles of Upper Austria , which inspired him to work on site names and settlement history, which initially even earned him the charge of Slavomania. He finally summarized the results of his research in a historical place-name book for Upper Austria, in which he corrected some of his controversial views. But he also devoted himself to the history of the library, school and theater system, as well as problems relating to sources.

meaning

Schiffmann earned lasting merit by building the study library and establishing the diocesan archive in Linz. With his place name book he created a reference work that is still indispensable today, on which the series of place name book of the state of Upper Austria by Peter Wiesinger , Karl Hohensinner and other authors, published since 1989 , is based.
