Fürstenberg Castle

history

Time as a castle

The origin of today's castle was the Fürstenberg or Vorstenburg castle. It should not be confused with Fürstenberg Castle near Neheim . It is also not identical with Fürstenberg Castle on the Weser.

The builder was Bishop Bernhard V of Paderborn around 1321/25 . The castle's task was to prevent the noble lords of Büren from advancing . The castle was built over the Karpke on the southwest edge of the Sindfeld. It was pledged by the bishops a short time after it was built, then changed hands several times and was destroyed at an unknown time. The area has been owned by the von Westphalen family since 1446 . Parts of the family carry the name Westphalen zu Fürstenberg . They built a new facility on the site of the old castle. The northeast tower and cellar with vaults have been preserved.

Castle construction

Friedrich Wilhelm von Westphalen , Bishop of Hildesheim and later also of Paderborn , had a castle built on the foundations of the demolished castle in the 1780s. The mountain plateau was leveled with considerable effort and secured by strong retaining walls. The castle was to serve as the bishop's summer residence. The architect was the Hessian court architect Simon Louis du Ry . The style is described as either late baroque , rococo or early classicism .

The castle has two floors. The main building has nine axes and a mansard roof . To the south, two large square side pavilions are connected to the main building by concave structures. In addition to the main building, a stables and a coach house were built in the north and large farm buildings in the north-east. This includes the house of the patrimonial judge from the early 19th century.

Around 1800, at the time of Clemens August von Westphalen, a landscape garden with various tree species was laid out on the previously bare mountain plateau and in the south and west of the mountain slope. There was an avenue of lime trees at the main driveway. In the immediate vicinity of the castle, the garden was designed with flower beds. The geometric garden in the north was probably not created until the 20th century. Hardly anything has been preserved from the original landscape garden.

Another story

After the end of the Principality of Paderborn and the transition to Prussia , the only patrimonial district court in the area of the former Principality of Paderborn was established in Fürstenberg in 1818. It was responsible for the possessions of the gentlemen von Westphalen, von Brenken and von Imbsen.

At the beginning of the revolution of 1848 , the castle, abandoned by its residents, was looted by insurgent farmers, the interior was destroyed and the archives burned. The castle and the neighboring village were then occupied by Prussian troops and criminal proceedings were initiated against those involved in the looting. In 1849 the patrimonial court was overturned.

The castle is still privately owned by the Counts of Westphalen zu Fürstenberg and is not accessible.
