Freiberg Castle is a 12th century castle in the municipality of Ludersdorf-Wilfersdorf , Styria , Austria .

history

The castle was built by the "Freynbergers" and was first mentioned in a document in 1472. In 1636 it came into the possession of Count Ott Gottfried von Kollonitsch , a member of a Croatian noble family, who had it expanded into a Renaissance castle . Only minor structural changes took place later, such as the chapel and the main staircase in 1747, the rococo ballroom.

After the Kollonitsch family died out in 1874, the owners quickly changed. In the course of the war and the post-war period of the Second World War , the castle got into a state that made the building authorities' closure appear justified. It was bought by Fischer, who did major renovation work. His sudden death left Freiberg again to an uncertain fate.

From 1973

In 1973 Erich Mohringer and Walter Haibel acquired the run-down castle from the state of Styria and the son of Fischer. In decades of their own initiative, they renovated the rooms and built apartments. So the castle was revived.

On the ground floor an inn (Walter Haibel) and the bookbindery were set up by Erich Mohringer. In the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s in particular, an important cultural meeting point emerged here. In the ballroom of the castle, groups such as Erste Allgemeine Verunsicherung and STS appeared in public for the first time.

Jazz greats like Art Lande , Cecil Taylor and others came here. Gerald Brettschuh's first major exhibition took place in Freiberg Castle. In 1976 a three-week artists ' retreat was organized with Austrian artists, including Franz Motschnig (now Franz Yang-Mocnik ). Marie-Thérèse Escribano rented a room in 1982. Bernhard Hüttenegger lived here and then wrote the novel Camouflage Color . Peter Ratzenbeck , Hartmut Skerbisch and Thomas Zehetmair lived here for several years .

After Erich Mohringer's death, his half of the castle was taken over by his heirs (four children). Today Erich Mohringer's bookbinding business is continued by his daughter Alexandra and her husband Johann Kober.

Walter Haibel sold his half of the castle in spring 2007.

The castle is a listed building , is open to the public and is made available, among other things, as an exhibition space for works by local artists and other events.

Art and cultural initiatives

April festival in Freiberg Castle

In 2013 and 2014, the artist Winfried Lehmann realized an art event in the castle as a contribution to the April Festival of Kunst Ost . For this he won the entrepreneur Ewald Ulrich, whose company headquarters is established in the castle, as a cooperation partner. From this, the Aprilfestval developed in 2014 as an independent cultural initiative.
