The Glérolles Castle ( French Château de Glérolles ) is located on a rock on the shores of Lake Geneva below Rivaz in the municipality of Saint-Saphorin in the middle of Lavaux in Switzerland .
history
The name of the castle is traced back to the Roman village Glerula (Glarea = Latin gravel), which was probably destroyed in 563 by a tsunami in Lake Geneva. The hamlet of Glérolles used to be on the lakeshore west of Saint-Saphorin.
The first walls of the castle date from the 11th century. It was first mentioned in 1270 when the Bishop of Lausanne enfeoffed it to Hugo de Palézieux . In 1303 the bishop bought it back from the lords of Palézieux and had it administered by a kastlan . Sébastien de Montfalcon began in 1536 to organize the defense of Vaud against Bern from Glérolles. During the conquest of Vaud by the Bernese in 1538, the castle fell under the rule of Bern until 1796 and was still administered by the Kastlan. It has not been a fortress since the 16th century.
After the Vaud uprising, it belonged again to Vaud. The canton of Vaud , founded in 1803, sold the castle to the Ruchonnet family, since then it has changed hands several times and has remained in private ownership.
building
The square keep (7 × 6.4 m) is the only one from the original complex. Half of it was demolished in the 19th century. On the south side there is still a double doorway from the 12th / 13th. Century preserved. The bishops Aymon and Sébastien de Montfalcon had the residential wing built on the east side at the end of the 15th and beginning of the 16th century. One of the halls has ornate beams and a late Gothic fireplace. In the 19th and 20th centuries there were major structural changes.
Wine region
The castle has a winery with five hectares of terraced area under the appellation Saint-Saphorin (Lavaux) (AOC) with various grape varieties such as Chasselas , Pinot Noir , Gewürztraminer and, as a specialty, the Humagne Rouge .
