The Wuthenau family had an old Niederungsburg demolished and the moated castle with a surrounding moat built on the site . The Wuthenau family remained the owners of the building until the expropriation during the land reform in the Soviet occupation zone in 1945 and the building was subsequently used as a retirement home. Today the castle is owned by the Burchard Führer Group, which still operates it as a retirement home.
