The Castle Hackhausen is a surge of reform architecture in Bergisch city Solingen . The history of the noble residence goes back to the Middle Ages . Most of the castle that still exists today dates from 1907, as it was rebuilt after a fire.

The castle stands since 18 September 1984 under monument protection .

Location and description

The castle is located off Landesstraße 288, Bonner Straße, in the Ohligs district on the edge of the Ohligser Heide . The castle presents itself as a cuboid, two-storey plastered building with a mansard roof , which is dominated by its skylights and a small lantern in the style of Neo-Rococo . The green shutters reveal the influence of the Bergisch style . The castle is located in the middle of a small moat , access is via a stone bridge.

The complex, which was expanded to include various outbuildings, is now privately owned and is not open to the public.

history

The roots of the Hackhausen court probably go back to the Middle Ages . The first moated castle at the same location probably came from the same time. In the 15th century came the Dukes of Berg by inheritance into the possession of the castle. Due to financial difficulties, Duke Wilhelm von Jülich and Berg sold the castle in 1485. The von Bottlenberg-Kessel family came into possession of the castle.

The old moated castle was in serious disrepair in the second half of the 18th century. The owner family von Bottlenberg-Kessel therefore had it demolished in 1772 and replaced by a larger moated castle in the Rococo style . That building was connected to its surroundings by a drawbridge over the moat.

On April 22, 1887 the castle was set on fire by the estate manager and then burned down together with the farm buildings, only some of the castle walls remained on the ground floor. In the period that followed, the basement was poorly restored. In 1891 the area was first sold to an economist and later, in 1893, to the merchants August von Recklinghausen and Richard Berg. They had the castle rebuilt in 1907 according to old plans based on designs by the architect Paul Schultze-Naumburg .
