General

Architectural monuments are "monuments that consist of structures or parts of structures". The list of monuments of the city of Solingen currently (2015) includes 973 architectural monuments. In addition, a decorative floor rosette at Kirchplatz 14 has been registered as a movable monument in Part C since July 16, 1997 .

If available, a name or a rough categorization (residential building, commercial building, factory building, auxiliary building, etc.) must be given for each monument; also the address, the date of entry in the list of monuments and the consecutive number assigned by the Lower Monument Authority . In addition, there is a brief description of all monuments, and if known, the approximate construction time is also given. A photograph is also available for some architectural monuments.

With the many half-timbered houses , some of which have been sheltered , more detailed explanations of the external design have been dispensed with in most cases. Unless otherwise stated, these are classic half-timbered houses of the Bergisch style . For this building tradition, the black painting of the stud work , the white painting of the window and door frames, the liming of the compartments , the green painting of the shutters and doors and the use of Rhenish slate for wall cladding are common. Often only the weather side of the building was initially slated; However, wealthy builders often afforded their houses to be slated on all sides.

Monument areas

Half-timbered house in the monument area Unterburg

For a long time, the city of Solingen had designated four monument areas in part D of the list of monuments.

  • Historic town center of Alt-Gräfrath around the market square at the foot of the monastery church, center of a small Bergisch town from the beginning of the 18th century
  • Upper castle with the reconstructed castle and the surrounding historical buildings
  • Hofschaft Dahl , Altbergische Hofschaft in the valley of the Viehbach, half-timbered houses of the Bergisch style, including the imposing Richterhaus
  • Wald town center with the church and the adjacent streets with historic buildings

At the beginning of 2013, another monument area statute came into force. This is the area of the Unterburg at the confluence of the Eschbach in the Wupper , below the monument area around the castle. The place is characterized by an almost closed development with half-timbered houses, some of which are centuries old.
