List of architectural monuments in Münster
The monuments list of the city of Münster is the list of monuments in which the listed cultural monuments of Münster are entered. On June 30, 2014, it comprised a total of 1602 cultural monuments; ( Architectural monuments , movable monuments and ground monuments ). There are also monument areas .
background
Monuments in Münster
In accordance with the law on the protection and maintenance of monuments in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia (DSchG NRW), the city of Münster forms the lower monument authority for Münster, the district government of Münster acts as the upper monument authority . The city of Münster has set up a lower monument authority at the city planning and building regulations office.
The lower monument authority has to keep a list of monuments.
The entry of cultural monuments in these lists takes place in consultation with the Landschaftsverband Westfalen-Lippe , which also offers professional advice from the LWL monument preservation, landscape and building culture in Westphalia and the LWL archeology for Westphalia .
The law says: "The list of monuments is open to everyone with regard to the entry of architectural monuments and permanent ground monuments." This means that in contrast to other federal states - Baden-Württemberg is an example - every citizen can view this list, even if he no legitimate interest ”. It would then have to be demanded that the viewable list 2 and the list made available as PDF - must be up-to-date and contain a brief description of the monuments. This is the only way for citizens to help effectively with the protection of monuments and, as volunteers, to take responsibility for the monuments that are worth protecting and that are important to them.
List of monuments
The prerequisite for the completeness of the list with all its information is the delivery of this data by the Lower Monument Protection Authority. The geographic coordinates and further details of the monument descriptions would then be added, provided that they are useful and verifiable.
The list includes - if available - a photograph of the monument, as a description - if available - the name, otherwise italicized the type of building, the address, a short description, if known, the construction time, the date of protection and the registration number of the lower monument authority of the city of Münster . The name corresponds to the designation by the monument authority of the city of Münster. Abbreviations have been resolved for better understanding, the typography has been adapted to that used in Wikipedia and typos have been corrected. A memorial or inventory number is important because this is the only way for these lists to take part in photo competitions such as Wiki Loves Monuments in a meaningful way.
Soil monuments
Ground monuments are movable or immovable monuments that are or were in the ground. The monuments list of the city of Münster also includes soil monuments. However, they are not shown in this list of architectural monuments; there are separate lists for them.
The archaeological monuments visible above ground include the Max-Clemens-Canal , the Landwehr characteristic of the Münsterland, encircled mansions and farms such as Haus Amelsbüren , the Wallburg Haskenau , as well as various burial mounds in the Hohen Ward and in Handorf-Dorbaum and Handorf-Hornheide.
Movable monuments
Movable monuments are all non-stationary monuments. The city of Münster's list of monuments also includes a few movable monuments.
Monument areas
“Monument areas are the majority of structures, even if not every associated individual structure meets the requirements of paragraph 1. Monument areas can be city plans, cityscapes, townscapes and silhouettes, city districts and districts, settlements, groups of farmsteads, streets, overall structures and individual buildings as well as their immediate surroundings, provided that it is important for their appearance. This also includes handicraft and industrial production facilities, provided they meet the requirements of Paragraph 1. ”In Münster, the Prinzipalmarkt, as a monument area, enjoys comprehensive ensemble protection.
List of architectural monuments
Architectural monuments are "monuments that consist of structures or parts of structures".
Because of the inadequate list of the Lower Monument Protection Authority, the monuments cannot be broken down according to city districts. For this reason, the alphabetical structure of the street names was temporarily chosen for better handling of the list. It would be desirable to activate the architectural monuments in Münster navigation bar. Therefore this list is currently being modified. The monuments that can no longer be seen here can be found in the city district lists
Architectural monuments by streets
Streets with A to S
The lists of monuments on these streets have been moved to the city district lists. Since the list for the Münster-Mitte district was still too extensive, the Münster-Altstadt district was also selected from it.

The monument by Bernhard Overberg (1754–1826) is on the south side of the church square . Overberg was from 1809 Regens of the neighboring seminary and dean of the Überwasserkirche. His grave is in this church.
Overberg became known through the “General School Ordinance for the Münsterland” of September 3, 1801, which was exemplary for its time. In it, he recommended classroom discussions instead of just memorization. Since 1789 Overberg was pastor of Adelheid Amalie Gallitzin until her death 1806th |

Überwasserkirche | Old town Überwasserkirchplatz 4 map |
The Überwasserkirche, also called Liebfrauenkirche or Liebfrauen-Überwasser , is a Gothic hall church . Its name is derived from "Above the Water", as it lies west of St. Paulus Cathedral on the opposite side of the Aa . The establishment of the Kanonissenstifts goes to the Münster bishop Hermann I return. The monastery connected to the Überwasserkirche served as an education and supply center for aristocratic women; the abbess had to be of noble origin until 1460.
The current church has been built since 1340, as evidenced by an inscription above the west portal. The tower was built from 1363 to probably the beginning of the 15th century. In the Überwasserkirche there were graves and a. of the Droste zu Hülshoff family and the baroque master builder Johann Conrad Schlaun , whose exact locations are not known. Since March 9, 2014, the Überwasserkirche has been the parish church of the parish of Liebfrauen-Überwasser in the west of Münster, which was formed from the parishes of St. Theresia, Sentruper Höhe, St. Sebastian, Nienberge and Liebfrauen-Überwasser (with St. Michael, Gievenbeck). |

Lukaskirche - Protestant church | Sentrup Von-Esmarch-Straße 1 map |
The entry as a monument was justified as follows: "The Lukas Church is an important testimony to the development of the Evangelical Church in Münster and as such also important for the history of the city in the period after the Second World War."
The church is made of brick, the shade of which characterizes its exterior and interior. The floor plan is that of an almost square hall with a wide, flat gable roof . The east side bends into a wide apse , while the west side is almost completely taken up by staggered windows with round arches. In addition, there is only one small window in the north east wall, through whose circular opening the first morning light should fall on the font . The tower consists of a relatively low, wide and round brick base with a high, covered cone tip. Overall, with its compact proportions, the exterior gives the impression of a protective castle. |

Antonius Church . | Geistviertel Weseler Straße 33 map |
The then parish church of St. Antonius was built from 1914 to 1917 according to plans by Ludwig Becker as a neo-baroque church with a transept and a large dome over the crossing . The outer walls were destroyed by bombing raids during World War II.
From 1949 to 1952, the current building was rebuilt under the guidance of Dominikus and Gottfried Böhm in the old, but largely simplified form without a dome and transept. The interior and choir have been completely redesigned as a bright hall with large cones on the sides. The ceiling is made up of many parallel, dark ribs . The large west window with a glass painting by Vinzenz Pieper also dates from this period. |

The west tower , which is essentially Romanesque, has been preserved from the previous building from the 12th century . The nave was rebuilt in the 15th century. At the same time, the tower was probably clad with ashlar masonry and raised by one storey, the helmet was put on in 1893. The east part of the late Gothic hall consists of a choir in the 3/8 end and a transept. The nave walls are structured by three-lane tracery windows and buttresses. The old and the new part are unified by the same shapes and a continuous steep roof. A ribbed vault was drawn into the nave , whose late Gothic tendril painting was exposed in 1961 in fragments.
The interior of the church is also protected. |

Old overwater cemetery | Old town Wilhelmstrasse map |
Old overwater cemetery, in use 1808–1887
With the relocation of the cemeteries from the densely built medieval old town in the 18th and early 19th centuries, burials were carried out in the Überwasserfriedhof in front of the Neutor from 1808. Originally the cemetery was located directly on the Catholic parish church of Liebfrauen-Überwasser. From 1770, the Überwasser parish was buried in the moat cemetery at the Buddenturm, which was laid out according to plans by Johann Conrad Schlaun. After the opening of the central cemetery in 1887, the Überwasserfriedhof was abandoned. In connection with the American occupation of Münster in 1945, the partial destruction of the central cemetery and the closure of the Lauheide forest cemetery, around 150 burials were still possible in the old cemetery after the war. Building and equipment: In addition to numerous neo-Gothic monuments, some high-quality grave monuments of important personalities of the 19th century have been preserved in the cemetery. Notable monuments include the grave monuments for General Wilhelm von Horn from 1832, for the cathedral scholastic Johann Hyazinth Kistemaker from 1834, the life-size and reclining figure of General Roth von Schreckenstein from 1858 and the memorial for the victims of the Franco-German War from 1870 to 1871 The simple urn for the important Protestant philosopher Johann Georg Hamann (1730 to 1788) is set up near the eastern entrance at the Neutor. The tomb originally stood in the garden of the house of Princess Amalie von Gallitzin in the old town. At the instigation of the Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm IV, the tomb was moved to the Überwasserfriedhof in 1851. |

The Raphaelsklinik was opened on July 10, 1908 under the sponsorship of the Clement Sisters in the immediate vicinity of their mother house, the Clement Monastery. At that time they already had about 100 years of experience in nursing, but were working under outside direction in different institutions. With the establishment of the clinic, they were able to apply their knowledge in their own hospital for the first time. From 1928 to 1930 the Raphaelsklinik was expanded. The groundbreaking ceremony took place on December 3, 1928, and the foundation stone was laid on March 26, 1929. This new building also includes Münster's first high-rise on Windthorststrasse, which was then still called Hagedornstrasse. |

Sacred Heart Church | Herz Jesu Wolbecker Strasse 121 map |
The neo-Gothic Herz-Jesu-Kirche was built between 1895 and 1900 according to plans by the Münster architect Wilhelm Rincklake . It was consecrated on June 22, 1900, the patronage festival, and is the first church in the diocese of Münster to be consecrated to the heart of Jesus .
The church is oriented in a north-south direction. It consists of a three-aisled nave with a transept , the arms of which, however, hardly extend beyond the aisles of the nave. The mighty, four-story bell tower, visible from afar, adjoins the nave in the south. It is 96.63 meters high, making it the highest church tower in Münster. The church itself is 61 meters long and 22 meters wide; the main nave is 24 meters high, the side aisles are 11 meters high. During the Second World War , the vault, the main altar and all windows were destroyed by bombs. Only the sacristy with its hand-carved parament cupboards survived the war unscathed . In 1951 the church was restored and the stained glass windows were later renewed. In 1970/1971 the church was redesigned as a result of the Second Vatican Council : an altar island was created in the crossing. The high altar has been removed. The choir behind the altar island is now used as a weekday church. |
