Bernhard Heinrich Overberg (also Bernard Heinrich Overberg or Bernard Overberg ; born May 1, 1754 in Voltlage , † November 9, 1826 in Münster ) was a Catholic theologian and educator .
Live and act
Overberg was ordained a priest on December 20, 1779 by Bishop Wilhelm von Alhaus and in 1783 appointed by Vicar General Franz Freiherr von Fürstenberg as head of the normal school in Münster , where he held courses for teachers. As a teacher of the teachers, he thus shaped the level of education in Münster and Westphalia. In 1809 he was appointed to the reign of the seminary and in 1816 to the consistorial and school council. In 1818 he received the Prussian Order of the Red Eagle, 3rd class. In 1823 he became an honorary member of the cathedral chapter .
Overberg became known through the “General School Ordinance for the Münsterland” of September 3, 1801, which was exemplary for its time. In it, he recommended classroom discussions instead of just memorization. From 1789 Overberg was the pastor of Amalie von Gallitzin until her death in 1806. His pedagogy was also followed by the education of the poet Annette von Droste-Hülshoff and her siblings.
Numerous schools and educational institutions are named after Overberg. B. the Overberg-Kolleg in Münster, as well as numerous roads throughout Germany. Josef Annegarn was one of his important students .
On the occasion of Bernhard Heinrich Overberg's 250th birthday, numerous events took place in Voltlage in 2004 . Bishop Franz-Josef Bode from Osnabrück celebrated the closing mass of this festival year . Overberg was also dean and pastor of Liebfrauen-Überwasser . His grave has been in the choir of the Überwasserkirche in Münster since 1902.
