A normal school was founded in Münster in Westphalia in 1783 by the school reformer Bernhard Heinrich Overberg . He headed it after the dissolution of the Prince Diocese of Münster and the incorporation of Münster into Prussia until 1826.

requirement

At that time there were abuses in the general elementary schools which, in Fürstenberg's opinion, were due to the lack of training and the unsuitability of the teachers. Any craftsman who was able to read, write and do arithmetic and who understood the catechism could apply as a teacher . This position was not particularly desirable as there was no regulated minimum salary.

Normal school

Overberg's main field of work was the training and testing of teachers. It happened in normal school courses. The normal school courses held by Overberg in Münster from 1784 to 1826 lasted two to three months. Overberg instructed the teachers in the seminary , whose regens he became in 1809, and showed them the practical application.

aims

Originally, the normal school served to qualify teachers who were already officiating , who, in Overberg's words, “had little or no previous knowledge”. From 1821, however, it was only attended by young candidates who wanted to prepare for teaching. Overberg wanted a full-time teacher, who was not distracted by any compulsion to take on sideline activities, and who could devote his full attention to the school.
