Josef Annegarn (born October 13, 1794 in Ostbevern ; † July 7, 1843 in Braunsberg ) was a theologian , educator and professor of church history and church law .

Life

Josef Annegarn was the son of the dogfish Joan Annegarn and his wife Maria Annegarn, nee Burlage. In February 1806, at the age of eleven, he became a half-orphan through the death of his father . He and his two siblings grew up in very poor conditions in Ostbevern.

From the age of 14 Annegarn attended the Paulinum grammar school in Münster . From 1813 to 1818 he studied theology and philosophy at the "Akademische Lehranstalt", the forerunner of the Westphalian Wilhelms University . After his ordination in 1818, he became vicar of the parish of Sankt Lamberti and a teacher at the normal school in Münster, run by Bernhard Heinrich Overberg . From 1830 Annegarn was pastor of the parish of St. Fabian and Sebastian in Selm .

In 1836 he was appointed professor at the Lyceum Hosianum in Braunsberg . There he taught church history and canon law, but also performed pastoral duties.

He was best known for his literary work. Its popular world history was published eleven times in 100 years and is still widespread today. As a result, he shaped the teaching of Catholic elementary schools in Prussia for almost a century .

Josef Annegarn died at the age of 48.

Honors

A secondary school and a street in his hometown Ostbevern are named after him, as well as a street in Selm .
