During the Second World War, food and fodder are stored, processed and distributed from Coerde to the garrisons in northern Germany in the nine large storage facilities in the so-called Speicherstadt . In 1938/39 the Army Supply Office had the Speicherstadt built, including the large bakery and another administrative building. After the war ended, the British used the building as Winterbourne barracks for almost 40 years . After the relaxation process between East and West, they no longer needed this 11.5 hectare facility, which was completely listed as a historical monument, in the early 1990s.

The Speicherstadt Nord was transformed into a modern archive, office and communication center that meets the most varied of requirements. Thanks to the uniform use of materials and careful detailed planning, the original character and uniform appearance of the monument complex was preserved despite the completely different use.

Parts of the "residential area Lincoln barracks"

The historic building stock on Grevener Strasse and Dreizehnerstrasse with ten listed buildings, four of which are larger buildings for teams around the middle-sized parade ground and the motor vehicle and factory halls in the northern and eastern parts, is characteristic of the former barracks site.

After the adoption of an urban planning structure concept in 1995, urban planning concepts were developed in a three-day design workshop in April 1996. The design by Carsten Lorenzen was implemented. Under the theme “Living on the Gasselstiege”, the main characteristics of the design are: the green zone within the quarter, the preservation of the external appearance of the listed ensemble to the public space and the strict north-south-facing row development in the new residential building.

In the autumn of 1995 the council decided on an “urban structural concept for the Lincoln barracks”. The goal: to turn the barracks into an attractive residential area. The municipal company "Wohn und Stadtbau" was commissioned with the implementation. In April 1996, in an open “design workshop”, five architectural offices sketched urban planning concepts in a competition. Citizens were also involved. The listed building structure formed the urban framework, supplemented by new buildings on the open spaces. The coexistence of historical buildings and modern residential developments was one of the main development opportunities for the quarter.

The Dane Carsten Lorenzen found the best solution for this togetherness . His concept: an independent, compact residential quarter on the former open space, which is separated from the listed buildings by a wide green corridor with play areas. The barracks' huge dormitories became attractive apartments with balconies.
