The Hunyadi Castle ( Romanian Castelul Huniade or Castelul Huniazilor ) is the oldest architectural monument in the western Romanian city of Timișoara and is located between the Piața Victoriei and the Piața Huniade . It has a tower and a brick facade. The architecture shows Romanesque and Gothic features.

history

The castle was built between 1307 and 1315 as the seat of the Hungarian King Charles I , who ruled from here for almost eight years. The statesman, military leader and namesake of the castle, the Romanian Johann Hunyadi , who worked for Hungary , had the building expanded and fortified by the Italian architect Paolo Santini de Duccio after an earthquake between 1442 and 1447 . During the occupation by the Ottoman Empire from 1552 to 1716, the castle was the seat of the pasha . During this time the walls were repaired and the fortifications modernized. During the siege of the city by Prince Eugene of Savoy , the castle was damaged in 1716, but was rebuilt afterwards. During the revolution of 1848 , the castle was destroyed by the Hungarian army, but rebuilt in 1856, giving it its current appearance. Until the end of the Second World War , it was used as a barracks and warehouse for military purposes.

National Banat Museum

Since 1948 the building has been the seat of the Banat National Museum (History and Natural History Department), which shows exhibits from the times of the Dacians , the Romans , the Wallachian voivodes and the Romanian kings Ferdinand I , Charles I and Michael I and their communist successors .
