history

Hiedungispuigin was first mentioned in 1113 as the property of Melk Monastery . In 1278 the battle between Rudolf von Habsburg and Ottokar II Przemysl took place near the castle . From 1295 to 1497 a knightly family von Jedenspeigen ( Idunspeugen ) acted as owners, later the family von Steinpeiß ( Steinpeiss ). From 1524 to 1574 the Lamberg (noble family) took possession. After Georg Clam Martinic , General Konrad von Pappenheim took over the castle in 1578, which then passed into the possession of the Barons von Kollonitsch (from the noble family of the Kollonitz von Kollograd ) in 1585 . According to Rudolf Büttner , this is said to have taken place as early as 1583. Until 1597 Jedenspeigen belonged to the Barons von Kollonitsch, who had the castle rebuilt. After several changes of ownership, the Counts Kollonitsch acquired the rule again in 1675. In 1874, Count Max Kollonitsch bequeathed the castle and rule to the Archdiocese of Vienna . The castle has belonged to the market town of Jedenspeigen since 1985.

building

South wing of the inner courtyard with arcade of Jedenspeigen Palace

Nothing is left of the medieval building. The current castle is a four-winged building from the 16th and 17th centuries. A ramp leads over a bridge to the castle gate in the east wing. The coats of arms of Georg Seyfried von Kollonitsch (1537–1599) and his wife Helena Fuchsin von Fuchsberg are located above the gate . The gate is emphasized by the castle tower. An octagonal structure with a flat pyramid roof sits on a two-story cuboid. In the south wing of the inner courtyard an arcade on Tuscan columns has been preserved. The west wing was converted into a three-storey bulk box in the 1950s. In 2019 the east wing of the palace was renovated. A vinotheque was set up on the ground floor and a new exhibition on the 1278 battle was designed on the upper floor.

Exhibition about the battle on the Marchfeld

Starting with the knight's hall on the upper floor of the castle, the prehistory, armament, effects and reception of the battle on Marchfeld in 1278 are shown in a total of 9 rooms. The highlight is a multimedia reconstruction of the battle on August 26, 1278. The battle events are explained in the context of the historical development of the participating countries Austria, Bohemia and Hungary. Busts of Ottokar Przemyls and Rudolf von Habsburg, animated by a video installation, recite excerpts from the Grillparz play of King Ottokar's Glück und Ende .
