Kapfenstein Castle

Kapfenstein Castle is located in Kapfenstein , a municipality in south-east Austria in Styria .

history

Kapfenstein was first mentioned in a document in 1065. The castle was a border fortress against the Magyars which was built by the Caphensteiners in the 10th or 11th century on the Basaltkogel of the Kapfensteiner Kogel. After the early destruction by the Magyars, the castle had to be rebuilt. In addition to the defensible location on the basalt cone, the wide view of the plain was a strategically important factor. The castle went to the Lords of Walsee in 1362 , after which it changed hands several times.

Under the Lords of Lengheim, who were owners from 1584 to 1799, the castle was greatly expanded. Land in Kapfenstein , Mahrensdorf, Gutendorf, Windisch Kölldorf, Neustift and Höflach belonged to the castle. Kapfenstein was a chalk fire station and was besieged several times by Turks and Kuruc , but could not be taken. Nevertheless, the castle was poorly cared for by the Lengheim family and in 1916 it passed to the Winkler von Hermaden family, who have been running the castle as a restaurant and hotel since 1968 .

In addition, numerous lands with forestry and an organic winery belong to the Winkler von Hermaden family. On 40 hectares of vineyards, 21 varieties are cultivated according to organic methods. The agriculture was converted to biodynamic farming.
