La Brède Castle
The castle La Brède ( French Château de La Brède ) is about one kilometer west of the town of La Brède and 15 km south of the city of Bordeaux in the French Gironde department . The famous judge and legal philosopher Montesquieu (full name and title: Charles Louis de Secondat, baron de La Brède et de Montesquieu) was born in the castle , who lived there and wrote most of his work. The entire area is since May 7, 2008 under monument protection .
The Gothic castle, built in the 13th century, is surrounded by a moat and an English landscape park and is surrounded by Bordeaux vineyards . It represents the characteristics of feudalism , and this style remained intact over the centuries, despite several renovations.
The last heiress of the family, the Comtesse Jacqueline de Chabannes (1912-2004), transferred her property and with it the castle to a foundation named after her , the “Fondation Jacqueline de Chabannes”.
The castle can be visited from Easter to mid-November. The Montesquieu library and his bedroom, both in the 18th century state, are particularly worth seeing.
The name "Château de La Brède" is also used for a cru from the Graves wine region .
