The palace was commissioned by Albert Kasimir von Sachsen-Teschen , the governor of the then Austrian Netherlands , to be built from 1782 to 1784 according to a design by the French architect Charles de Wailly in the classical style . He lived here with his wife, Archduchess Marie Christine , Maria Theresa's favorite daughter .

In the United Kingdom of the Netherlands (1815–1830) it served together with the associated domain as the partial residence of the Dutch King Wilhelm I.

After the revolution and the subsequent secession of Belgium, the castle became the residence of Leopold I , King of the Belgians, from the Saxon-Coburg and Gotha family . His son Leopold II expanded the castle, had the greenhouses built in the park and renewed the entire park.

The castle has its own royal train station .
