Donjon of Menetou-Couture Castle

The castle Menetou-Couture is a member of Menetou-Couture in the French department of Cher and consists of a medieval Donjon from 1460, as well as a residential building from the late 15th century. The other additions go back to the middle of the 18th century.

The donjon was built by the brothers Jean and Philippe de Villaines, Seigneures de Menetou-Couture, as part of a heavily fortified military base on the border between the provinces of Bourgogne and Berry . The property was owned by this family for several decades. In 1908 the owner at the time had to sell the associated lands. Of the original 667 hectares, only 40 hectares remained, which corresponds to the area of today's park. The current owners bought the castle in 1990.

The building, surrounded by old trees, has a stair tower and is over 30 meters high. Its architecture was not influenced by the Renaissance period . Overall, the rectangular donjon with its chimneys and its roof structure shaped like a keel-up boat is an example of a residential tower from the 15th century.

The donjon has been classified as a Monument historique since 1917 . The interior and the park are open to visitors.
