Cingle de Montfort

The Montfort Castle stands on a craggy rock, 90 meters above the Dordogne , at the end of the famous river loop "Cingle de Montfort" in the municipality of Vitrac in the French department of Dordogne .

The facility is located in a park surrounded by walls and was extensively restored in the 19th century . Nothing is left of the medieval predecessor buildings. The ruins of the left wing have been reconstructed, the tower dates back to the 15th century, the rest from the 16th century. In the past those with pieces from the time of Louis XIII. and Louis XIV. furnished rooms in the basement accessible to visitors; now Castle Montfort can no longer be visited.

In its history, Montfort Castle was conquered, burned down and rebuilt three times. In the Albigensian Crusade in the 13th century, Simon IV. De Montfort took the castle. During the Hundred Years War , the castle was under Louis XI. and then destroyed under Henry IV .
