Salsta Castle

Salsta Castle is a baroque castle in Vattholma, Uppsala municipality , about 25 km north of Uppsala . The castle belongs to the Swedish state and is managed by Statens fastighetsverk , and has been a monument since 1993 .

history

Fixed house

A permanent house is mentioned here as early as the High Middle Ages. At that time the river Fyrisån was still navigable up to Salsta. Karl Gregersson zu Salsta, an illegitimate grandson of Birger Jarl , sold Salsta to Abjörn Sixtensson, a member of the Swedish Imperial Council, of Tofta in 1301 . In the 15th century the castle belonged to the Oxenstierna family , and the Reichswerveser Bengt Jönsson Oxenstierna was honored as a major donor to the Tensta near Salsta church with a donor portrait under the church's murals. His son Jöns Bengtsson zu Salsta (lat. Johannes Benedicti de Salista ) became rector of the University of Leipzig , archbishop of Uppsala and imperial administrator of Sweden.

Renaissance castle

Salsta was captured and burned down by Sten Sture the Younger's troops in 1516 because the Imperial Councilor Sten Kristiernsson Oxenstierna had betrayed the Sture party to the Union party. In the middle of the 16th century Salsta became the seat of the Bielke family . Nils Turesson Bielke built a three-story renaissance castle here and parts of this renaissance building are still preserved. His grandson, Nils Bielke , Count Bielke von Åkerö (1644–1716), started the renovation in 1670 to what is now the baroque palace. It was designed and constructed in the French Baroque style by Mathias Spihler , possibly based on a model by Nicodemus Tessin the Elder .
