The castle's predecessor was a castle, the date of which it was built is not known. The von Schliestedt family, which died out in 1613, sat on it. A copper engraving by Merian from 1654 shows the complex, consisting of a main building with a half-timbered upper floor and an auxiliary building with a stone gatehouse . According to his description, the castle was very old at the time, had a square shape and was surrounded by a moat .

history

As early as 1449 the Lords of Schliestedt renounced the castle in favor of the Duke of Brunswick . The castle was owned by four noble families until 1527 and was then lent to a chancellor of the Duke of Brunswick. As a ducal fiefdom , the castle came to von der Streithorst in 1562. 1747 bought Heinrich Bernhard Schrader of Schliestedt with permission of Duke Charles I the castle. He tore it down and built the two-storey rococo castle not far from the castle site according to plans by Martin Peltier de Belfort . After various changes of ownership and different types of use, Schliestedt Castle has been a senior citizens' home since 1950 .

Castle Park

During construction work in 1994, an underground barrel vault made of brick came to light on the site . It was probably laid out in the 16th century and connected the castle with the outbuildings.
