A castle from Stadtroda was reported as early as 1500. Like many other buildings, it fell victim to a city fire. The palace was given its present form in the years 1663 to 1734. Prince Christian Wilhelm established his court with his wife Countess Louise Reuss zu Schleiz .

From 1780 the house served various offices. With the formation of the new duchy of Saxony-Altenburg in 1828, the ducal district chief moved into the castle as his official residence. From 1876 to 1900 it was the seat of the administrative district Roda of the Duchy of Saxony-Altenburg , from 1900 the district office Stadtroda, from 1920 the administrative seat of the district Stadtroda and from 1952 to 1994 the administration of the district Stadtroda . Since the district reform in 1994 , the building has housed the Stadtroda District Court .
