Unteröwisheim Castle

The Unteröwisheim Castle , also Maulbronner Pfleghof or Fronhof called, is a former Pfleghof the monastery Maulbronn in Unteröwisheim , a district of Kraichtal in the district of Karlsruhe . After the secularization of the monastery by Württemberg in 1534 , the Pflegehof was expanded into a palace. Today it is a meeting place of the YMCA .

history

As early as 1247, a chapel was built in Unteröwisheim “St. Jakobus ”, which stood in the courtyard of the castle until 1826. The Pflegehof was first mentioned in 1347 in a purchase agreement between the Margraviate of Baden and the Maulbronn Monastery, in which the monastery acquired the margravial Fronhof . A year earlier, the Unteröwisheim monastery and its church patronage had acquired Baden. Under the rule of the monastery, the building served as the seat of the caretaker for Unteröwisheim. In 1556, as a result of the secularization of the Wuerttemberg monastery, the Pflegehof was taken over and expanded into a palace. In 1590 he was equipped with prisons and in 1676 with a drawbridge, loopholes and a forecourt. In 1689 the castle was partially burned down by French troops as a result of the Palatinate War of Succession . At the beginning of the 18th century, the buildings were rebuilt under Friedrich August von Württemberg-Neuenstadt , with the main building being renewed again in 1748. As a result of the exchange and epuration treaty between the Kingdom of Württemberg and the Grand Duchy of Baden , the municipality of Unteröwisheim came to Baden in 1806. In the now unused castle, the community accommodated a school and teacher's apartments. In 1826 the no longer used chapel in the inner courtyard was demolished. In 1908 the building was renovated and new classrooms were set up in the east corner of the castle. After a fire in 1989, the castle was renovated by the CVJM Baden. Today it is a meeting place of the YMCA.

description

The castle consists of several buildings that form an almost rectangular closed system with rounded corners. The two-storey main building of the facility, which essentially dates from the 17th century, is on the north and west side and used to contain the band house and the nursing home. To the south of the building are several former stables and farm buildings in a non-uniform design. On the south-west side there are also parts of a tower with studs , which probably dates from the 15th century. The castle used to be surrounded by moats and enclosed by a wall, of which supporting pillars are still preserved on the northeast side. The chapel, demolished in 1826, stood diagonally in the inner courtyard with the five-eighth end in an easterly direction.
