Jeremy Ulick Browne, 11th Marquess of Sligo (born June 4, 1939 in London - † July 13, 2014 ), was an Irish nobleman and politician . He held the courtesy title of Earl of Altamont until 1991 .

Life

He was the only son of Denis Browne, 10th Marquess of Sligo (1908-1991) and Jose Gauche. He studied at St. Columba's College in Dublin and at the Royal Agricultural University in Cirencester .

When his father died in 1991, he inherited his title of nobility. Because of his subordinate title Baron Monteagle , he was entitled to a hereditary seat in the House of Lords . In contrast to his other titles, this title does not belong to the Peerage of Ireland , but to the Peerage of the United Kingdom . With the House of Lords Act 1999 he lost his hereditary seat in parliament.

In May 2014 his book A Life at Westport House was published. 50 Years A-Going .

On October 26, 1961, he married Jennifer June Lushington Cooper. Together with her he had five daughters:

  • Sheelyn (* 1963)
  • Karen (born 1964)
  • Lucinda (* 1969)
  • Clare (* 1974)
  • Allanagh (* 1980)

Since he had no sons, his cousin Sebastian Ulick Browne (* 1964) inherited his titles.

A year and a half after Jeremy Browne's death, his heirs were forced to sell the family estate Westport House , which had been in the family's hands since the 17th century, for financial reasons.

Jeremy Browne was a direct descendant of the Irish pirate queen Grace O'Malley . Before the establishment of the family home, Westport House , one of the pirate queen's castles was said to have been there.
