Velden Castle, residential wing

The Schloss Velden or the former fortress Velden residing in the township Neufelden in Rohrbach District of Upper Austria . The parts of the building that still exist today can be found there at Burggraben 1 and Markt 2.

history

The castle was first mentioned in 1161 when it was owned by the Knights of Velden. Around 1206 a knight is called Hans Velden. Helmhart der Rothe was slain in 1266 during an incursion by the Bavarians, who besieged , conquered and set fire to the place . His daughter Klithilde was married to Ullo von Blankenberg . The rule of Velden then came to passau through seizure . In 1311 Hans von Kapellen was to be found there, who also owned Pürnstein Castle in 1337 . In 1383 and 1388 the Veste Velden was documented there.

From 1347 to 1443 carers were employed at the castle . To be mentioned are: Chrunrat II. Von Tannberg (1347; † 1354), Hertlein Herleinsperger (1391), Peter Schönauer and knight Andreas Herleinsperger (1413). From 1430 to 1479 the property was pledged to the Herleinsperger. A Thomas Velden was listed as pastor of Kirchberg in 1501 . The Herleinsperger redeemed the rule of Velden von Passau in 1503. Around 1505 the property came to Hans von Tannberg (from the Aurolzmünster line). Achaz Prembser followed him. At the time of the Peasant Wars , Velden was besieged and devastated by 800 peasants on May 19, 1626. In the fortress was the seat of the Passau nurse and the nursing court, later a prison was housed there. The fortress was largely demolished in 1699 and replaced by a town house in 1789.

In 1789 the property was sold by the Diocese of Passau to the linen dealer Karl Wöß, who built the current building. Other owners were Franz Zwiermiza, Josef Karl Peßler (1810), Gabriel Kobelmüller (1825), Anton Löffler (1826) and the Weilnböck family (1829 to 1900). The Scherrer family has owned the castle since 1926 .

Velden Castle today

The residential wing built in 1789 has been preserved from the castle. In the southwest (moat) there are remains of a late medieval tower and the walling . Farm buildings were housed there.

The building was damaged in World War II . After the war (1950) the house was renovated and used as a hotel (Hotel Scherrer). Another renovation took place in the 80s of the previous century. Today the building is used as a tenement house. The two-storey main house has a mansard roof and a late baroque facade. On the side of the market there is a plaque commemorating a visit by the Upper Austrian composer Anton Bruckner on September 16, 1890.
