history

The Weinberg Castle in Waren an der Müritz was built in the 1870s by the Waren architect Gustav Werner and completed in October 1875. The client was Hermann von Maltzan . In the autumn of Michaelis (September 29th) 1875, the Natural History Museum Malzaneum moved into the rooms of the house. After the house was sold in 1876, the museum had to move out again. In 1877 the house was bought by Herrmann Bachstein and it became the seat of a building department of the Mecklenburg Southern Railway .

From 1911 to 1939 the folklorist Richard Wossidlo temporarily lived in several apartments in the Weinbergschloss, in which he housed his extensive records, library holdings and his private folklore museum. After the collection became too extensive, Wossidlo sold this museum collection with approx. 3400 exhibits to the Grand Duchy of Mecklenburg-Schwerin in 1912 . In 1922 the museum was transferred to Schwerin and opened to the public in 1936 as the Mecklenburg Farmers' Museum “Wossidlo Collection” in Schwerin Castle .
