He traveled to the Netherlands, France and Italy and stayed in Rome in 1816/17 (→ German Romans ). From 1804 until his death in 1818 he was a full member of the Prussian Academy of the Arts in Berlin . In 1807 he became an external honorary member of the Felix Meritis Society in Amsterdam .
Works
His reproductions based on works by Rembrandt, Rubens, Raphael and Ruisdael became particularly well known. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe wrote about him: “To spread the beautiful ideas of great artists and thereby affect the taste of the whole nation or several nations, I call Johann Joseph Freidhof. Freidhof's leaves in black art are delicate, hard-working, lovely in their power and effect. He has proven to be a good artist and deserves a lot of praise. "
