history

Staufer and Rechberger

The castle was first mentioned in 1269. Shortly after the fall of the Staufer, the castle and the place went to the Rechbergers in 1326 . In 1335 Albrecht the Schilcher von Rechberg sold Welzheim to his sister Mechthild for 1000 pounds of Heller. She was the widow of the donor Friedrich II of Limpurg and guardian for her son Albrecht von Limpurg. When the city with the castle burned down in 1556, the castle was built on this ground. This castle served as the widow's seat of the Limpurgers. When the Limpurgers died out in 1713, the Württembergers followed as owners of the house.

House of Württemberg (1713-1718)

As early as 1708, the Schorndorfer Vogt received the ducal order after Schenk Vollrat's death in Welzheim. Which he did a day later. Gradually, the Limpurgians in Welzheim lost their importance, while the Württembergians gained them. For example, the keys to the town hall, church and castle went to the Schorndorfer and Lorcher Vogt. In 1713 the Württemberger received Welzheim, as the last Limpurger Schenk Vollrat died. But Welzheim and the castle did not stay in Württemberg for a long time. As early as 1718, Duke Eberhard Ludwig von Württemberg gave this property to his mistress Christine Wilhelmine von Graevenitz , Countess von Würben.

Christine Wilhelmine von Graevenitz, Countess von Würben (1718–1735)

That was a kunkelle fief, i.e. a fief that can be inherited in the female line. She took very good care of the Welzheim administration. Every quarter she had to report in detail to the officials. She hung up the Würben flag on the tithe barn , the castle, the office and rectory and on the gates. In 1726 the castle burned down. Then a stately home was built there. When Christine Wilhelmine von Graevenitz and Duke Eberhard Ludwig von Württemberg broke up in 1731, because the heir to the throne of Duke Eberhard Ludwig Friedrich Ludwig died, things only went downhill for her. Eberhard Ludwig died in 1733. Until then he could not reconcile with his duchess and father another child. So his cousin Karl Alexander came to the throne and in 1735 removed all of Würben's coats of arms.
