history

The Oldenburger Schlossgarten is a historical park in the style of the English landscape garden . It was laid out by the court gardener Julius Friedrich Wilhelm Bosse on behalf of Duke Peter Friedrich Ludwig von Oldenburg .

In 1803 and 1805, the Duke acquired meadow land in the immediate vicinity of the Residenzschloss in order to have a residential garden laid out and in 1809 began the detailed planning. The duke himself made drawings. However, the first approaches to the palace garden were largely destroyed during the Napoleonic occupation. In 1814 the Duke commissioned Julius Friedrich Wilhelm Bosse to rebuild and rebuild the palace gardens. Julius Bosse looked after the garden for 42 years and decisively shaped its appearance, which has changed little to this day.

In the spirit of the Enlightenment , Duke Peter Friedrich Ludwig combined his personal need for rest and relaxation in nature with the endeavor to enable his subjects to enjoy nature more refined and to convey his own understanding of aesthetics, morals and customs to the outside world. Attempts were made to recreate a natural landscape and at the same time to enhance it with different picturesque perspectives. From the beginning, large parts of the initially ducal and later grand ducal gardens were open to the public. The only conditions for admission were “appropriate clothing and manners”. The custom of entering the palace garden in Sunday attire continued until the 1950s . In the same decade, the then garden director Max Heber converted the palace garden to meet the needs of the population. As a result, the change from the Fürstengarten for the upper class to the Volksgarten for all classes was finally completed. In the post-war period, the palace garden, which had hardly suffered any damage from the war, was converted into a kitchen garden; Former flower beds were used extensively for growing fruit and vegetables. Some trees fell victim to the fuel shortage and were cut down.

The castle garden has been owned by the state since 1920, i. H. until 1946 owned by the Free State of Oldenburg , since then owned by the State of Lower Saxony . In 1952 the "Association of Friends of the Castle Garden eV" was founded, which has been committed to the preservation of the park ever since. It has been a listed building since 1978. Employees of the State of Lower Saxony are responsible for maintaining the palace gardens. According to an agreement made in 2007, the state will assume two thirds of the costs and the city of Oldenburg one third.

The castle garden manager traditionally resides in the court gardener's house.

In 1914 the 100th birthday of the palace gardens was celebrated with an exhibition and the planting of oaks by the ducal family, from April to September 2014 events and exhibitions for the 200th anniversary took place.

Characteristics

Characteristic for the palace garden are a nature-like arrangement of plants with water courses, a curved path and the flowing transition into the surrounding landscape. As early as 1828, the Duke had the rhododendrons that are typical of the region today planted. The rhododendrons in the Oldenburg Castle Gardens are among the oldest in Germany today. Many large trees from around 1800 have also been preserved to this day. Historical buildings such as the Hofgärtnerhaus, the tea pavilion or the winter house complete the inviting atmosphere. After dusk, bats become active on the grounds of the palace gardens.

The lack of temples , ruins architecture or chinoiseries is atypical for an English landscape garden . This deviation can possibly be explained by the fact that Bosse and his successors followed the aesthetic concept of the landscape architect Humphry Reptons , who even refrained from such staffage structures in his work .

The palace garden in the context of tourism marketing

“Oldenburg Tourist” praises the palace garden as a “walk-in painting”. The Oldenburg Castle Garden forms the heart of the “Route of Garden Culture”, a network of more than a hundred gardens in northwest Germany. In 2014 there were a number of events on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the Oldenburg Castle Garden.
