The Senftenberg Castle Park is a listed park in the southern Brandenburg district town of Senftenberg . Senftenberg Castle and an animal park are located in the park. In the south, west and north it is bounded by the Steindamm, in the southeast by the Black Elster and in the northeast by meadows.

history

The palace park was laid out as Kaiser Wilhelm Park from 1912 during the tenure of Mayor Kieback. For this purpose, the remains of the former castle pond that surrounded the castle were drained. The park still has its original trees today.

In 2009 the palace gardens were partially redesigned for around 400,000 euros. The access to the castle was paved with granite slabs and basalt, and two ponds were created based on historical models.

Buildings and monuments

At the western entrance of the castle park is the Polenzhaus , built on the occasion of the 500th year of Hans von Polenz's death in 1937, based on the design of the town planning inspector Pfau . The house previously standing there was therefore torn down in 1936. In order to adapt to the outside of the castle, the Polenzhaus received a tower and windows in the Renaissance style, which were modeled on those of the castle. The tower is decorated with a sgraffito by the hand of the Senftenberg artist Günter Wendt , which shows Hans von Polenz with the Niederlausitz coat of arms flag. Today the building houses a gallery belonging to the district museum. Two sculptures are placed next door: the sitting woman nude by Siegfried Krepp and the polyester sculpture Mother with Child by Ernst Sauer . The file was stolen in August 2017.

Memorial

The monument to Friedrich Ludwig Jahn , located southeast of the Polenzhaus, was erected between the end of June and the end of August 1911 by the Germania gymnastics club; the city of Senftenberg provided the area free of charge. On the occasion of the inauguration of the monument on August 20, 1911, a gymnastics festival took place in Senftenberg.

On August 23, 1925, a memorial made of Posta sandstone by Schurig from Dresden was inaugurated for the 528 fallen and victims of the First World War from Senftenberg, of which only remnants are preserved today. You are not far from the Wendish Church .

Memorial for victims of fascism and militarism

In 1962 a memorial for the victims of fascism and militarism was created by the Senftenberg artist Ernst Sauer.

Remnants of the former castle pond are in the eastern part of the park, they are optically divided into a so-called large and small pond by an arch bridge. Some of them are fed from the Black Elster via underground canals that flow around the castle to the east and north. There is an East Asian-style pavilion by the large pond.

South of the castle park, on the original castle pond, was the official mill , which was once compulsory for 17 villages and which was in operation until the beginning of the 20th century. In 1551 it was already equipped with six grinding aisles as well as a stamping and a fulling process; a cutting and oil mill were added as part of an expansion. The remains of the former teaching mill are now located at the former location of the official mill.

Animal park

The Senftenberg zoo is also located in the castle park and is delimited by the fortress ramparts and the Black Elster. On June 12, 1931, it was stocked with local animals, a black red deer, a pair of fallow deer, a pair of roe deer and a pair of swans. The entrance consisted of a semicircular half-timbered building with a hipped roof, which was used as a material store during and after the Second World War. On July 14, 1954, the zoo was reopened. In 1957 the bear enclosure was occupied by the two brown bears Puppi and Moritz; over 50 bears were born here. In May 2012 the last bears were relocated to an animal park in the Black Forest. Over time, the stock of native animals was supplemented with exotic specimens such as rhesus monkeys, leopards and meerkats.
