The castle pond on the Braunshardter Weide is an extensive natural monument in the Braunshardt district , town of Weiterstadt , in the Darmstadt-Dieburg district in southern Hesse . The bird protection wood with a moist core zone was placed under nature protection by ordinance of March 31, 1950, published on April 3, 1950 .

location

The natural monument is located northeast of Braunshardt in the Feldflur, about 500 meters east of the county road 165 to Schneppenhausen . It extends over a length of about 240 meters at the Ewigerstumpf-Graben. Its area is 6288 square meters. About 100 meters south of this is the natural monument " Ewigerstump bird sanctuary ".

description

The natural monument "Schlossteich auf der Braunshardter Weide" consists of a dry ditch surrounded by wood and two hollows that are sporadically filled with water. Until around 1850 these were two ponds, which were probably used to fill the pond in the park of Braunshardt Castle . In 1940 there was only one pond, which also largely disappeared due to the increasing lowering of the groundwater level in the 20th century.

In the eastern, more humid hollow, some reeds and swamp iris grow , along with milk stars and wild garlic on the edge . The woods are mainly willow and alder , black elder and some hybrid poplar .

Because of its isolated location, the natural monument is an important retreat for many animal species such as hedgehogs , ermines , partridges , pheasants and wild rabbits . 20 species of birds breed here, including the occasional turtledove . Several species of butterflies have been observed.
