Günter Bernhard

Günter Bernhard (born March 1, 1926 in Graz ; † June 20, 2014 ) was an Austrian sports scientist .

Life

Bernhard was professor for the theory of physical exercise (later sports science) at the University of Graz . His habilitation thesis was entitled "Didactics of Youth Athletics". For more than 30 years, from 1971 onwards, he was director of the Institute for Sports Science, and from 1983 to 1987 he was dean of the humanities faculty at the University of Graz. He published the textbook series "Athletics of Youth" in several editions.

In addition to teaching athletics, Bernhard's research included the concept of talent, school sports, the Olympic movement and sports in China. He is credited with having done fundamental work to create school sports-related training courses.

He was an honorary professor for sports science at Shenyang University in China  and an honorary doctorate in sports science at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz in Germany .
