Schlumbergera microsphaerica is a species of plant in the genus Schlumbergera from the cactus family(Cactaceae).
description
Schlumbergera microsphaerica grows epiphytically or epilithically with richly branched shoots . The shoot sections are 1.5 to 6 inches long and 0.2 to 0.5 inches wide. They are completely covered with areoles that are 2 to 5 millimeters apart. The areoles are either bare or up to 15 brown or brownish yellow bristles 1 to 5 millimeters long arise from them.
The pendent, more or less radial symmetry to zygomorphic flowers are fuchsia red to white. The inner bracts are fused into a 1.5 centimeter long flower tube. The outer bracts are free. The reddish brown pericarpel is slightly pentagonal. The fruits have five indistinct edges and are green.
Distribution, systematics and endangerment
Schlumbergera microsphaerica is distributed in the Brazilian state of Rio de Janeiro at altitudes of 2000 to 2780 meters.
The first description as Cereus microsphaericus was published in 1890 by Karl Moritz Schumann . Paul V. Heath placed them in the genus Schlumbergera in 1992 . The following subspecies are distinguished:
- Schlumbergera microsphaerica subsp. microsphaerica
- Schlumbergera microsphaerica subsp. candida (Loefgr.) DRHunt
About the threat of Schlumbergera Microsphaerica in were endangered Red List species of IUCN before 2002 insufficient data. After the list was revised in 2013, the species will be classified as " Vulnerable (VU) ", i. H. listed as endangered.
