The Schmack , also known as Schmackschiff or Smak , is a two-masted coastal sailor with a flat bottom and a gaff rig . This type of ship was in use in the Netherlands from the 16th to the 19th century and in Germany since the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries; he was ousted by the kuff .
The smacks were mostly with side swords equipped, but also copies with were Kimmkielen built. The main mast was initially driven with spritsails , but later gaff rigging prevailed. The mizzenmast carried a staysail and sometimes an additional staysail in front of the mast.
The Gesine von Papenburg is considered the last ready-to-drive Schmack in Germany. It was built as a steel replica based on old sketches at the Meyer shipyard in Papenburg as a journeyman's piece.
