The Sorrowful Mother of Telgte, including the Galen reliquary

The Sorrowful Mother of Telgte , a Mater Dolorosa in the form of a Pietà , is the miraculous image in the Marian shrine of the diocese of Münster in Telgte .

history

According to legend, it is said to have been carved from the Marienlinde , but recent research has shown that the picture was carved from poplar wood around 1370 . In addition, the statue was not made from one piece, but from several wooden blocks. It is possible that a wealthy merchant from Telgte used it to decorate his parents' grave. In 1466 there is evidence that a roof was built in front of the picture. Under Prince-Bishop Christoph Bernhard von Galen Telgte was elevated to a place of pilgrimage and the image to an image of grace. The first Telgter pilgrimage took place in 1651 and the foundation stone for the pilgrimage chapel was laid on June 1, 1654 . In 1701 the pilgrimages increased considerably when Friedrich Christian von Plettenberg gave Telgte the preference over a Kevelaer pilgrimage .

On July 3, 1904, the miraculous image was commissioned Pope Pius X by Cardinal Anton Fischer crowned . In the 50s of the last century, the crown was positioned over the miraculous image. Exactly one hundred years later, on July 3, 2004, the coronation was renewed by Cardinal Gilberto Agustoni and Bishop Reinhard Lettmann . Clemens August Graf von Galen , who greatly venerated his ancestor and predecessor in the episcopal office, often visited the miraculous image in Telgte. A plaque on the provost church of St. Clemens , which is located in the immediate vicinity of the Gnadenkapelle , still commemorates his pilgrimages .

A reliquary of the Bishop of Galen is set into the wooden stele of the miraculous image .
