Pain Space (“behind the bone is counted / SCHMERZRAUM, 1941-1983”) is a room installation by the German artist Joseph Beuys (1921–1986).

The work

In December 1983 Beuys completely clad the room of the Düsseldorf gallery Konrad Fischer with lead plates . A bare incandescent lamp hung in the middle of the ceiling and gave off scant light. In addition to this, Beuys installed two silver rings of different sizes.

Joseph Beuys then published signed serigraphs for his work under the title “Behind the bone is counted - pain space” (1984).

The installation is now in the permanent exhibition of the CaixaForum Barcelona . It was sold to the Fundació la Caixa in 1985 and has been rebuilt there since the CaixaForum Barcelona opened in 2002.

interpretation

Heiner Stachelhaus interpreted that one ring had roughly the circumference of a child's head and presumably stood for the term “life”, the other ring had the circumference of an adult's head and symbolized death. As an association, the total elementary isolation is obvious, as a kind of shelter from the outside world. Beuys chose lead because it combines with most elements and at the same time has the ability to absorb rays such as X-rays . On the other hand, the lead chambers of the Doge's Palace in Venice would come to mind, prison cells of the Inquisition in which torture , suffering and pain reigned. Since the flow of energy in his work is always extremely important for Beuys, he deliberately placed the silver rings in his lead chamber because the element silver , unlike lead, conducts heat. Lead = cold versus silver = warmth. In this installation Beuys plays with the simile of human warmth, trapped and isolated in a cold room. “What is needed is warmth,” he quotes Beuys.

Joseph Beuys explained about his work: “For me there is no question - the time bomb is ticking. Everything is so ossified that movements are hardly possible. Yes, counting is only behind the bone. "
