Schmid von Grüneck (Ilanz)
The Schmid von Grüneck (also Grünegg) were the most important noble family in the town of Ilanz in the Surselva in the Swiss canton of Graubünden from the 14th to the 18th century .
history
In 1544 the family was raised to the nobility by Emperor Karl V and was allowed to bear the title "von Grüneck" after the castle of the same name , which was already in ruins at the time. The Schmid had an upright snake in their coat of arms, the professional symbol of the forge.
Hans Jakob Schmid von Grüneck, the owner of Haus Schmid am Obertor, today Haus Calonder , was Landammann and Bundnerischer commissioner in Chiavenna . Six representatives of the family, including Johann Anton Schmid, the builder of Casa Gronda, were district judges of the Gray League. Several representatives of the Schmid were military leaders in the European armies of the 17th and 18th centuries.
In Ilanz, in addition to two houses, the coats of arms and inscriptions on the Obertor remind of the influential family that had a decisive influence on the fate of the first city on the Rhine over the centuries. Thanks to the initiative of the Schmid von Grüneck family, the city also owed the help of the Reformed cities of Zurich and Bern in completing the reconstruction of their walls after the city fire in 1483 and in decorating their gates in the years 1715 to 1717. Johann Jacob Conradin, the last male Representative of the Grüneck family, died 1695; In 1836 the last female Schmid von Grüneck of the Ilanz line died.
The Casa Carniec was the oldest residence of the noble family Schmid. The vaults in the basement and ground floor date from the High Middle Ages . The former ballroom is decorated with wall paintings from the mid-16th century. The pictures were painted " al secco " on the dry plaster. The motifs are embedded in flowers, vines and oak tendrils. The illustrated ribbons that originally ran around the room were partially destroyed by structural interventions. 1996–1998 the pictures were restored.
In 1980 Casa Carniec was acquired by the “ Museum Regiunal Surselva ” foundation that had been established a year earlier .
