Schmolke Carbon is a company founded by Stefan Schmolke in 1992 in Konstanz on Lake Constance ( Baden-Württemberg ). It manufactures parts from carbon fiber reinforced plastic ("carbon", KFK), including handlebars and seat posts for bicycles.

Since 2003, when Jan Ullrich with the Schmolke carbon handlebars, the Tour de France in second place ended and the driver is the only bicycle handlebars could claim from KFK against aluminum handlebars in test series, Stefan Schmolke focused exclusively on his business. The handlebar is known as Schmolke Carbon in racing cycling.

history

In his youth, Stefan Schmolke began actively racing together with his brother Matthias . His passion for sport and the resulting technical interest in lightweight construction prompted him to study mechanical engineering and to do a corresponding thesis under Dipl.-Ing. Hans Christian Smolik . Towards the end of his studies in 1989 he and his brother opened a bike shop specializing in "high-end products".

The course was completed in 1992 with the topic: "New materials and the theory of a carbon racing handlebar". One year later, Stefan Schmolke had already manufactured the first mobile handlebars. Thus, over 25 years ago, he was the first to produce carbon racing handlebars. In 1992 he founded the Schmolke Carbon company.

In order to deepen his experience in lightweight construction, Stefan Schmolke initially worked full-time in a design office that worked for aerospace manufacturers such as the Airbus Group . He also continued to improve his carbon handlebars. It took less than two years for the handlebars to be so popular that production capacity was exceeded.
