The snow waltz is a dance song from Carinthia in waltz rhythm . It is one of the most famous melodies in the German-speaking folk music scene .

Origin and processing

The work was first published in 1887 as waltz no. 1 of the "Walzer Idylle" Ein Sonntag auf der Alm op. 71 by Thomas Koschat (1845–1914) and was originally entitled "Jägerständchen". As with earlier (op. 26) and later (op. 100) works, Koschat gave the comment “with partial use of Carinthian folk tunes”. Since no recording of the melody can be found in printed sources, in the Carinthian Folk Song Archive or in the Koschatarchiv, the work is often viewed as a likely original composition by Koschat. The song received the popular title Schneewalzer around 1900 due to the beginning of the text of the original version of Koschat "When's can snow mer åber schneibt [...]". The text of the refrain part "We danced the snow waltz [...]" can be identified for the first time in an arrangement by Willi Bender (1968).

Sometimes song texts are sung in different variations. The piece of music is officially in two parts; composing musicians often add additional melodies. Among the performers of the snow waltz are, for example, Peter Alexander , Heino , Edi Bär , Carlo Brunner , Arno Jehli , Martin Nauer , Herbert Roth and Beny Rehmann . The Ländlerkapelle Oberalp created with Los duendes Paraguayos a version with vocals entitled Üuses Schwiizerland ish chlii (our Swiss country is small).
