content

The radio play, which is also known under the name “ALDI Operetta”, comprises a total of ten chapters and is around 55 minutes long. A total of four voices, an announcer and a choir can be heard. The radio play shows different and sometimes unbelievable reports from the working world of a discounter . The reports come from internet forums and weblogs and were written by saleswomen, interns, trainees, applicants and sales managers from the discounters Aldi , Schlecker , Plus and Lidl . The weblog material has been revised linguistically and musically in several steps by Butzmann and Eisenmann.

At the beginning of each chapter there are instructions from the director, which should underline the respective topic musically and literarily.

The first chapter, “Trial Day”, illustrates the beginning of an employment relationship with a discounter. Chapter two, “The young executive”, describes the day-to-day work of a young executive. The frightening consequences of this activity are intensified by the choir. “The test purchase” is the subject of the third chapter. Characteristic is the dramatic style of play that comes into play when describing a test purchase. Chapter four, “Light,” contains hardly any text. Noises from barcode scanners and shopping carts can be heard in the background . Chapter five, “Personnel costs”, is characterized by numerous stage directions within the chapter and the presentation of many different contributions. In the sixth chapter, "The Executives", the situation of sales managers at discounters is presented in four monologues and mixed with sometimes monumental music. Chapter seven, “The Hit List,” illustrates how discount store employees have been fired. This is recorded in a kind of chant that is recorded while walking. Chapter eight, "Employee Control", is depicted as gloomy and thoughtful and shows the discounter's monitoring mechanisms for better employee control. Chapter nine, “The Labor Market”, is presented through a secret telephone conversation and conveys to the listener the difficulties in the labor market. The last chapter, “The termination”, closes the circle from the beginning to the end of an activity at a discounter. A dismissal discussion is illustrated here in a monological manner.

Interpretative approach

The work and experience reports are often absurd and terrifying, sometimes tragicomic and unimaginable and give an interesting overview of the working world of the discounters. The original documentary approach of showing the conditions in large supermarket chains from interns to department heads was composed by Frieder Butzmann and Barbara Eisenmann into their own work from the original sounds.
