Schoenobius is a genus of butterflies from the family of Crambiden (Crambidae).

features

The moths show a pronounced sexual dimorphism . The females are significantly larger than the males. The head has ocelles , the antennae of the males have short eyelashes. The proboscis is only rudimentary. The labial palps are longer than the head and thorax combined. The spur formula of the genus is 0-2-4 (front, middle, rear tibia), the epiphysis tibialis is developed. The veins R 3 and R 4 are petiolate on the forewings. The wire R 2 is not connected to the cell . In females, the apical frenulum consists of a single bristle although there are three bristles at the base.

In the male, the uncus is long and pointed, the gnathos is relatively long and widened towards the base. The subteguminal process is small and largely connected to the tegumen . It does not protrude ventrally . The scale-like appendages ( coremata ) at the base of the valves are relatively heavily sclerotized .

In females, the corpus bursae is spherical. The apophyses are comparatively strong, especially the apophyses anteriores. The ovipositor is stronger than in the genus Donacaula .

distribution

The genus is common in the Palearctic and Oriental . Many species known from South America probably do not belong to this genus.

Systematics

The genus Schoenobius counts 21 species. In Europe only Schoenobius gigantella occurs.
