Conrad Widow (born August 13, 1686 in Hamburg ; † October 19, 1754 ibid) was a German lawyer , councilor and mayor of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg.

Life

Born in Hamburg, Widow attended the learned school of the Johanneum from 1699 and the academic high school from 1702 . After finishing school, he studied law at the University of Giessen and the University of Halle , then toured Holland, England and France before graduating from the University of Strasbourg in 1714 with a degree in both law .

After completing his studies, Widow returned to Hamburg in 1715 and settled here as a lawyer . Just three years later, on June 4, 1718, he was elected councilor. From 1724 to 1726 he belonged to the group of authors of the moral weekly Der Patriot published in Hamburg . This publication became an important mouthpiece for the Early Enlightenment in Germany.

In 1726 Widow traveled to Hanover as councilor together with the council syndicate Johann Julius Surland (1687–1748). Before that, Albrecht Peter Meyer (1687–1736) had been introduced by the electoral government as a preacher at Hamburg Cathedral . The Hamburgers wanted to continue to choose their own preacher. Widow and Surland negotiated this in Hanover. When the Hanoverian Elector George I died in 1727, the two traveled to London on the same matter, congratulated the new King George II on his accession to the throne and received a promise of a settlement from him, which, however, only came about in 1737.

On December 1, 1742 Widow was elected mayor as the successor to the late Rütger Rulant (1665–1742). As mayor, Widow laid the foundation stone for three Hamburg churches: in 1743 for the Trinity Church in Sankt Georg , in 1751 for the Great Michaelis Church and in 1754 for the Small Michaelis Church .

Widow died in 1754 at the age of 68. A mayor's penny was minted on his death .

The Mayor of Hamburg, Peter Hinrich Widow (1736–1802) was a son from the second marriage.
