Scottish hats are a summary of the typical Scottish headgear worn mainly by the armed forces of the United Kingdom :
- Balmoral Bonnet : a kind of beret with a bobble in the middle
- Tam o 'Shanter : flat, often plaid hats with a bobble
- Glengarry Bonnet : a "boat" with a bobble and relatively long neck bands
- Feather Bonnet : a headgear made from ostrich feathers with side tails that hang down to about the shoulder on the right side (similar to a bearskin hat )
While these hats are worn “diced” in the military ( diced: with a red and white check pattern on the lower edge), they are common in civilian life without this check.
Balmoral and Glengarry can be worn with all men's suits , while the Feather Bonnet is only worn with the parade uniform (the Scottish full battle dress ). Metal clan or regimental badges can also be worn on all military headgear , as well as colored bushes (hackles) or feathers. Three feathers are the badge of a chief of a clan , two are that of a chieftain .
